Heart coherence is gauged by measuring your Heart Rate Variability (HRV), which is the inter-beat difference between each beat of your heart. Scientists believe HRV to be an important indicator of health and fitness. As a marker of physiological resilience and behavioural flexibility, it reflects our ability to adapt effectively to stress and environmental demands.
When we are stressed, angry or frustrated, our HRV becomes chaotic and this inhibits cortical (brain) function by affecting the messages sent from the heart to the brain. This chaotic rhythm (incoherence) also makes the heart muscle decline more quickly and can age us prematurely.
Coherence is the optimal state in which the heart and the emotions are in-sync and balanced. It is a state of energetic co-ordination. This is when the other body systems work in harmony with the heart rhythms, enabling you to be in the zone – the place where you feel great, can think clearly and can perform at your best.
